You know it can get cold around here, but sometimes it gets cold.
Remember toward the end of January 2019 and the two words that sent a chill down our area’s collective spine? Polar vortex. Not only was it “record-settingly” cold, it was that way for an extended period of time.
Another polar vortex is something we don’t hope for, but it is something all of us should still prepare for. You literally don’t want to be caught in the cold at the times you need warmth the most.
Do you have good protection against deep cold? Here are just a few items to consider for your home before winter gets its icy claws dug deep.
You probably know what we’re going to say, but it’s the truth: Do you have foam insulation where you most need it?
If you have old batting in your walls, it’s not your best option. We, of course, recommend foam.
RetroFoam has a higher R-value
than traditional rolls of batting. A higher R-value means a greater resistance to thermal change, keeping warmth longer and more intensely.
Usually, fiberglass batting has an R-value of around 13. RetroFoam, on the other hand, can range between 14.5 to 23.7, depending on the thickness of the foam that we can easily pump into spaces between your walls.
We can, of course, help you determine the best uses of foam to keep warm in a deep winter freeze. And if you do wish to move forward with installation, there’s a lot less you have to do to get ready than with other traditional forms. We don’t need much room to get where we need to go!
Heaven help anyone who suffers burst pipes during a cold snap.
While good general warmth throughout a home goes a long way toward preventing pipe ruptures, there may still be certain areas that are more susceptible to cold, such as your attic or basement. Give yourself some extra protection and peace of mind by buying some pipe lagging (you know, that squishy tube of insulation that can go around pipes) and wrapping it around your pipes before winter.
There’s plenty more to check out, including your HVAC, water heater, and other winter concerns. It’s always wise to tour your own home before the first snows hit to make sure you’re set.
